FORTY UNDER 40 AWARD

“We were tasked with redesigning our operating model to ensure scalability in order to reach our billion-dollar goal,” she says. “Six of us worked with an executive team member and a subcommittee of our board of trustees. We worked for one year to develop a new model. It has been fulfilling to see some of the fruits of our labor already appearing.”

She has helped the organization stay on track with this goal and has also played a role in helping the business to have 30 percent revenue fundraising growth since 2011.

“All of our efforts are focused on saving and improving kids’ lives at our member children’s hospitals and it really can’t get much better. [I] see first-hand the result of communities supporting their children’s hospitals. It puts everything in perspective.”

Carrie Brinton 39
Chief Operating Officer/Founder, National Institute of Medical Aesthetics
President/Founder, Elase Inc.

Elase Inc., which offers aesthetic services, was hit particularly hard by the Great Recession. In order to meet the challenge with her business intact, Carrie Brinton helped pioneer a new business model. The company pivoted from selling big-ticket services to offering a membership that enables clients to pay a monthly fee. Since Elase launched the program in 2009, it has seen a 140 percent increase in sales and its sales conversion rate grew from 50 to 90 percent.

Five years ago, Brinton co-founded The National Institute of Medical Aesthetics, a training facility that now boasts more than 500 graduates. NIMA has already expanded to three out-of-state locations and is on track to hit a year-over-year revenue growth rate of 33 percent.

Brinton says she enjoys “taking a problem or an opportunity and breaking it into its parts and analyzing it from every angle. … I love to take a new idea and refine it over and over into something that our students and clients are going to love.”

“You have to be willing to follow somebody else’s vision sometimes—they may have more insight or they may really just need the opportunity to lead at that moment. You have to really want to make everybody on your team succeed, even more than you want yourself to succeed.”

Antioxidants 101

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our food and products which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body.  Antioxidants act as “free radicals scavengers” and neutralize, hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals.  Free radicals cause wrinkles, dull skin, skin cancer and age spot or hyperpigmentation.   These antioxidants work by speeding up the skin’s natural repair systems and by directly inhibiting further damage.

What are the most common antioxidants?

Vitamin A

Vitamin C

Vitamin E

Carotenoids

Selenium

What are the top foods that are high in antioxidants?

All berries, pomegranate, grapes, oranges, pineapples, all yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, brazil nuts, shell fish, vegetable oils, and broccoli are some of them.

Vitamin C

What is it?  This is a familiar essential antioxidant for the skin and body, it is critical; but it is not produce by our body.  It is beneficial and crucial that we add vitamin C to our daily regimen.  It comes in a number of forms, but the purest version of vitamin C and worth your hard-earned money is “Ascorbic Acid”.  This antioxidant has proven antiflammatory, collagen building and sun protecting benefits.

Vitamin E

What is it?  Vitamin E is vital protecting skin cells, because of its antioxidants activity’ it protects gains UV rays, pollution, drugs, and other elements that produce cell damaging from free radicals.  Vitamin E helps prevent the appearance of age spots or hyper pigmentation, it reduces trans-epidermal water loss from skin and strengthens the skin’s barrier function.

My favorite skin care product yet?

C E ferulic

C E FERULIC

from SkinCeuticals

I am in love with this antioxidant, because of its benefits, and how much my skin has benefited from it.  I have noticed a major improvement with my age spots, and fine lines, there has been and improvement overall on my skin’s appearance.  I apply this product every morning after I’ve washed my face, follow by a moisturizer and then a sunscreen.

Whenever I perform facials on my patients, I love to customize it to their needs and most of the time use this products on them.  They tell me how much they like it and how they love how it feels on their skin.

Shaving vs Waxing: What’s Best for Redheads?

One of our NIMA Instructors, Cassandra, was featured on how to be a redhead!! Cassandra gave some helpful tips for our beautiful redheaded friends….

We have learned about a leg hair removal treatment for sensitive skin, but what happens when the only options are shaving or waxing? What is best for a redhead’s skin? We spoke with Cassandra Buzis of the National Institute of Medical Aesthetics (NIMA) in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is one of the best when it comes to spa procedures and top-notch customer experiences. “ If you have sensitive skin, shaving every other day might be a better option because it gives the skin a chance to heal before it is exfoliated again,” said Cassandra. “Waxing can also be a good option, but you have to make sure your esthetican uses a sensitive cream based wax.”

However, she asks that all redheads are cautious about which option they choose. “Shaving and waxing are two very different modalities. There is no way to say that one is better than the other. It really depends on personal preference and how much time you have. Both have their pros and cons.”

Cassandra Buzis gives us the pros and cons of each. You decide what is best for you:

SHAVING 101:

1.  ”Shaving is always best when you have steamed the skin in the shower. When you enter the shower, lather your hair and body, then rinse and start to condition your hair. When you hair is being conditioned shave. The hot steam will open up the follicles and lead to less irritation and ingrown hairs. Shaving is a great option if you want to be silky smooth for the night and maybe the next day. It is not the best option for a long vacation as then hair will grow back fairly quickly.”

BEST RAZORS:

2. “My favorite razors are actually made for men. I have used the ‘Mach 5′ for years and really like how soft it leaves my skin. The best razors in general are SHARP razors. Once the blade starts to dull you need to throw it away. Also, if you ever nick yourself enough to bleed you need to throw the razor away. The blades are a breeding ground for bloodborne pathogens and bacteria. A new razor every month is a good starting place.”

USE SHAVING CREAM?

3. ” I actually do not recommend shaving cream. It can leave the skin tacky and makes the hair too slippery. I do however recommend Coconut Oil. It will remove the hair right at the base of the skin and also moisturize.”

WAXING 101:

4. “Waxing can be a great alternative to shaving because it pulls the hair from the root leaving less stubble. Although, if you are a virgin waxer it might take a couple of treatments before your skin is silky smooth. Hair grows in cycles, so not every hair is targeted in one session. After you have waxed at least 4 times you will notice the hair will be thinner and softer and will also grow back slower. Waxing is a great option for vacations.”

THE PAIN OF WAXING:

5. “Waxing doesn’t have to be painful. A lot of the pain can come from poor technique and poor pre-care. Always make sure skin is well hydrated and moisturized. Think of your hair as a weed. It is much easier to pull the weed out from the roots when you water the ground before you pull. Also do not over exfoliate the skin before your appointment. Wax has the ability to remove up to 5 layers of dead skin. If you exfoliate right before your treatment the wax will remove too much. There are also numbing creams and sprays that can be used.”

BEST BRAND OF WAX:

6.  ”I prefer to use a honey or resin based wax on the body. This wax is also known as strip wax or soft wax. On the face I recommend cream based waxes and hard wax because of its non-irritating ingredients and because it is less likely to over exfoliate the skin. Brand wise I like Berodin, Cirapil, and Amber.”
